Spain | 5 Value-Packed Cádiz Experiences
Oh Cádiz, Cádiz, Cádiz (province, city, and historic centre)!
This sun-drenched and effortlessly authentic Spanish destination didn’t seem to be on many ‘must-visit’ lists (yet!), and admittedly it doesn’t boast show-stoppers like magnificent Moorish palaces or whimsical Guadí masterpieces.
Yet, Cádiz surprised us—we had unforgettable afternoons lounging at a rooftop pool with unbeatable views, some of the best meals we’ve had in Spain, and a captivating glimpse into its rich history.
On top of that, the locals were among the kindest and warmest we’ve encountered in Spain. Cádiz is also just a convenient train ride (<2 hrs) from Seville, making it an easy addition to any Andalusian adventure!

One. Relax at a stylish hotel with incredible pool views & an outstanding breakfast
Hotel Olom is a stylish boutique hotel nestled in Cadiz’s historic centre and offers quality amenities designed for modern travellers.
Its standout feature is undoubtedly the rooftop pool & terrace, which has an unbeatable view of the iconic Catedral de Cádiz—surely there isn’t a more stunning pool view in town! There’s even a cocktail bar if you fancy a post-dip tipple (yes, please).
WoWa Tip If you’re heading to Spain in cooler months, bear in mind the water isn’t heated (it was freezing when we went in late autumn!).
Contemporary with a touch of vintage, our comfy hotel room featured artwork by a local artist, modern automation controls and even a record player with a selection of vinyl records.
WoWa Tip The bathroom of this ‘adults only recommended’ hotel has glass walls that can’t be fully covered by the sliding door, so it’s probably not ideal to share the room with a friend.
FYI We booked our room for ~€125 a night in late Nov 2024.
Breakfast at the hotel’s El Patio was divine and and far surpassed my expectations. Each set came with a hot drink, juice, and our pick of two dishes from a variety of locally sourced choices—all for an unbelievable 15€!
WoWa Tips Indulge in the impossibly flaky croissant, best paired with Iberian ham and organic tomato! The ‘Pork Rinds Benedict Eggs’ was also a splendid choice for our mains.
Two. Taste classic Cádiz tapas at an atmospheric tavern
From the moment I stepped into the rustic Taberna Casa Manteca, I was hooked. The walls, adorned with vintage posters and faded newspaper clippings, told stories of Cádiz’s past, while the lively chatter of both locals and tourists created a warm, convivial atmosphere. The staff were also lovely and patient with us tourists, despite how busy it was!
WoWa Tip There was a waiting list for the outside tables, whereas the bar inside was first come, first served (and, in my opinion, more atmospheric).
Taberna Casa Manteca is also known for some of the best tapas in Cádiz!
Be sure to try local delicacies like ‘Gambas Fritas’ (crispy prawn fritters), ‘Pescado en Abodo’ (fried marinated fish) and, of course, some locally-produced sherry.
FYI We spent about 13€ for 2 drinks and 2 tapas.
Three. Feel the rich history of one of Western Europe’s oldest cities
Visiting Teatro Romano de Cádiz costs literally nothing, and I’m honestly bewildered as to why.
The remains of this former Roman Theatre, dating back to the 1st century BC and believed to have hosted various performances like theatrical plays, provide a captivating glimpse into Cádiz’s ancient past. The adjacent interpretation centre also offers fascinating insights into the city’s important role during the Roman Empire. Don’t miss this free attraction!
WoWa Tips Teatro Romano de Cádiz is closed the first Monday of every month and on several other days—check for updated information here. Also, for an entertaining and informative introduction to Cádiz, join Cadizfornia’s tips-based walking tour; we had a great tour with Pablo!
Four. Savour creative cuisine at an upscale yet affordable hidden gem
Think fancy cuisine looks better than it tastes, or that it costs an arm and a leg? Wrong and wrong at one of Cádiz’s top restaurants, Contraseña (a sibling of Michelin-starred Código de Barra)!
We savoured a delightful yet wallet-friendly classic 7-course tasting menu, thoughtfully crafted to celebrate regional cuisine with a modern twist. Excellent wine and fantastic service from an English-speaking waiter rounded off one of our best dining experiences in Spain.
My favourites? The intriguing ‘Our olive’ (I’ll keep the surprise element secret!), garlic prawns served with a unique flour topping and dry sherry, and decadent french toast with thyme ice cream.
WoWa Tip Check out the current menu here and make a reservation via Google Maps or their website.
FYI We spent 88€ (~A$145) in total for 2 classic tasting menus, 2 glasses of wine, and a bottle of water.
Five. Crunch on crispy churros & do as the locals do
Cheap yet addictively satisfying, the thin and crunchy churros at Churrería Ana Churros are a must after exploring the nearby Mercado Central de Abastos de Cádiz!
For the best experience, follow the locals’ lead and enjoy the churros with rich hot chocolate and a bold espresso at Club Social Ayuntamiento.
